Does anyone have a hard drive recommendation? What kind of performance
do people get with whatever brand/model they're using?

I have a slower CPU/ memory and I can pause and play TV on both tuners.
With both tuners recording, my system starts to top out. I also encode
at 640 x 480 so it looks like the main difference is the hard drive.
423MB of my memory is in use for cached files meaning that 79MB is used
for the programs to run, so I'm not sure that more memory will help.
Whichever way you decide to go, let us know how it works out.

My hard drive is pretty old, I did some tweaking with hdparm and 23 Mb
was about the best I could do. Would A faster hard drive or more memory
actually increase my performance or am I CPU bound?

Your hard drive seems slow. Are you using ATA66 or ATA100 (80 wire
ribbon cable)?

I using a cheap system I built this week. My system has an Athlon XP
1700, 512MB PC133 ram, 2 WinTV tuner cards, SBLive, Ensoniq, 60GB IBM
HD.=20

hdparam -t returns:
Timing buffered disk reads: <reads:%A0> 64 MB in 1.65 seconds =3D
38.79 MB/sec (same results multiple times)

Top returns 44% idle time, with a load averages of 0.52.

I noticed that watching live TV uses 95-100% CPU time using mpeg4
encoding at 640 X 480. My system is an Athlon XP 1800 with 256M PC 2100
ram. Running hdparm tells me that my hard drive throughput is about 23
Mb / sec. Is this performance about what I should expect? If so, what
would be the best way to increase performance, more memory, faster
processor or faster hard drive?

Thanks.
