I think you are probably right, at least as far as I understand.

I don't know how they do it in Freevo, but they seem to rely on a
patched version of the SDL libraries 
(see http://freevo.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/DocumentationPage#head-722363072fde0919e32e97556aab0ae8c47e861b)

Works like a charm, but no recording...
