 Peter,

 FYI I just build latest mplayer (svn38018) together with external provided
 ffmpeg3.4.2 sources and sample3.mkv plays OK.
 This tells me that issue with sample3.mkv playback under myth is probably
 related to way either:

 a\ how we are calling ffmpeg vdpau api

 b\ integration of ffmpeg3.4 within mythtv

 just data point...
