 That probably explains what I have seen, both now and earlier.  I have few
 persistent rules (and, fwiw, almost no downloaded metadata) and the
 deprecated 'merge' affected only the oldrecorded table.
 I may investigate more, but the unexpected returns are easy to spot and
 ignore.
