Comment:

 William, since this is a serious problem and nobody else is reporting it,
 it doess seem to be specific to your system.  Just in case it's version
 specific, can you easily try MariaDB version 10.1.24-6 from Debian
 testing?  That's what I'm using and I haven't had any issues.
