#12789: MythTv Transcde Setup is Poorly Documented

TLDR: Please document how to setup transcoding in MythTV so the average
6GB 1-hour MPEG2 recording can be compressed to a h.264 (or equivalent)
with size of ~1.5GB.
-------
I've been looking on the wiki and online for any information about how to
setup the basic transcoding features of MythTV. All I can find are out-
dated or sporadic information about transcoding scripts and hand-waving
over the many details steps needed to configure and use transcoding in
MythTV.
From what I can tell the default transcoding is set to lossless and
actually will double the size of your video. There is a setup option for
"custom filters" but no documentation on how to enable compression (I
assume) in this field.
Using MythWeb "transcode" button, I am not given any option to choose what
type of transcoding profile to use, so I assume it either picks a default
one set at some location, but I have no idea how to change it.
There is also some strange format called NUV or RT4Jpeg, whatever that is.
It is not explained on the wiki and the only information about it is that
it is some defunct encoding format that only MythTV uses at this point in
time.
To me it is really sad that it looks like a lot of work as gone into
providing a transcoding feature in MythTV but there was never finalized
documenation created for this feature.
