 My system (0.28; NVidia; RedHat Enterprise Linux; precompiled binaries)
 does indeed use LIRC.  But it also occurs from a keyboard attached the the
 frontend machine directly.
 I haven't considered trying again without LIRC but sure can give it a go.
 I will update here (only) if it makes a difference.
