 Thanks for troubleshooting everyone. I'm just about to try disabling LCDd
 (seems to still be working OK for me in 0.28).

 I'm rather sad to have to disable my VFD display. Over the last 10 years
 it has been faithfully telling me what's recording, even with the TV
 switched off. But I'd rather have the playback/exit issue fixed as it
 makes everything so much easier when you have several users.
