 I have investigated this further.

 It turns out that the -p option does work, but only if security PIN is
 disabled.

    1) The MythTV:1 DOES exist, isn't advertised in the device description.
    2) If you backend is SecurityPin="" frontend will show an open lock
 icon, but pressing Save will fail with "Unknown error"
    3) If you backend is SecurityPin="1111" frontend will show a closed
 lock icon. pressing Save will not ask for a pin, but just fail with
 "Unknown error".
    4) If you backend is SecurityPin="0000" frontend will show an open lock
 icon. pressing Save will succeed.
