 Thanks for the feedback.

 It isn't appropriate to close this yet as I just reverted the problematic
 commit, so the problems that motivated the original commit have been
 reintroduced. But knowing this commit was indeed the problem is very
 valuable and allows me to try at a proper fix without having master in a
 bad state.
