 I'm not sure if I had the exact same problem but I got the dreaded:

 Protocol version check failure.
 The response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION was empty.
 This happens when the backend is too busy to respond,
 or has deadlocked in due to bugs or hardware failure.

 On a fresh install of CentOS 6.3 with both fixes/0.26 and fixes/0.25. Mine
 was slightly different in that I never got a single successful connection.

 I was really hoping to go with a more LTS solution like CentOS but I don't
 have time for it to be down anymore so I'm installing Fedora 17.
