 On one test system here, using the myth_system call (IsPulseAudioRunning)
 to check whether the server is present takes around 0.13 seconds. If I
 disable that call and just let the PulseAudio connection fail takes around
 0.02 seconds - a saving of around 1/10th second each time we start the
 frontend and start playback.
