 FWIW, in [17029] (18 months ago), trunk was changed to delay displaying of
 the detail popups (and, therefore, the AJAX calls) until the user had
 hovered over a link for 1/4 second.  In [20241] (6 months ago), the change
 was backported to 0.21-fixes.  Therefore, the 2nd issue you mentioned will
 be fixed if you update to anything even close to current, and doing so may
 relieve your concerns over the first issue.
