 "Dear, it sliced off your finger because you waited a few seconds before
 retrieving the DVD," isn't going to mollify ''my'' spouse.

 However, with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), it is *Ubuntu* that is closing the the
 drive tray.  As a work-around, adding the following to the end of
 /etc/sysctl.conf (and rebooting) prevents auto-closing the drive tray:

 dev.cdrom.autoclose = 0
