 I haven't done any 10.5 testing yet, but initial research indicates this
 is caused by 10.5 garbage collection, and a delay between the fork() and
 exec():

 I'm assuming it is a bug in Mac OS X's daemon() call, but I do not have
 the motivation to track that down. I might just put a runtime call to
 check the OS rev or GC status.
