 Bill, good thinking with the USB suggestion. There was a minor error in
 the memset of buffer, and I reorganised things a fair bit, but the
 underlying logic was sound. Thanks for the hard work you put into this. I
 am testing a PowerPC build now, but don't expect a problem.

 Matthew, I want to test your addition further before I apply it. Logically
 it doesn't make sense to me, because eject() will already have called
 driveStatus(), so I don't see the point in doing checkMedia() (which will
 call driveStatus() a few more times).
