 Recently seems to have abated. I've been associating it with the vastly
 increased backend CPU utilisation I've seen recently. Re-nicing my
 frontend to -15 helped a little, but I think using the Bob deinterlace may
 have cured it.

 Another question ; could the original reporter try switching his
 deinterlace to Bob and tell us if that fixes it?
