 Each time this is called (which happens during the
 http://localhost:6544/xml processing) the thread leaks a bit of memory.
 I've identified two sources of memory leak but the last one remains
 elusive. I'd like to get what I'm sure about into svn so I don't have to
 keep reapplying the change every time I refresh my source.
