<p>Apparently the mime database on linux is generated from the files
in /usr/share/mime/packages. the freedesktop.org.xml file in that
directory should contain entries for html and common extensions.
If anything is changed the database is regenerated using "sudo
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime/". I believe update-mime-database
will also be run by apt when you install a package.</p>
<p>Perhaps your freedesktop.org.xml file has been corrupted.<br>
</p>
<p>This applies to ubuntu. Other distributions may be different.<br>
