In at least the current libhdhomerun finding devices
across subnets should work trivially, as long as you
have proper IPv6 local-scope multicast discovery in
your router (and if you don't, you need to upgrade to a
router that supports proper IPv6), or you have setup
your router to forward certain IPv4 broadcasts across
subnets (which is typically available with any real
routers).
There are also third party external recorders for
the HDHR that allow specifying the IP, even if that
IP is somewhere else across the planet (for various
reasons interplanetary tuning is not currently supported).

For the 95%, local link broadcast "just works" (as
people just put everything on the same network).
For those with more exotic configurations they may
need to step up their knowledge level, or admit
they have chosen a bridge too far and simplify
to their actual competency level.

When I originally posted this question I was wanting to eliminate the bridge from the PC running the VM for reasons unrelated to mythtv.

Since then I found a way to solve my other problems with modifications to my DNS server which made the use of a bridge work fine for my mythtv VMs.

So for now configuring a bridge that allows my mythtv VM to be on the same subnet as my HDHR tuners solves the problem.

JIm A
