While this might be a technical improvement, I'm concerned about the eco-system it will support. I'm guessing Netflix and Prime Video will always be there, somehow, but i'm doubtful about the xfinity streaming app and a mythtv front end.
In some ways it is unfortunate that they
did not go with RDK for their streamers,
which would have given them access to
over 300 existing streaming apps today.
However, RDK is not really targeted for
the tablet form factor, so it would not
have been a one solution for all without
additional work.
I consider these as being related. It seems
likely that Amazon will not quickly migrate
any of their various existing devices as step
one will be getting the ecosystem into
developers hands so they can choose to
write new versions of their apps, and that
takes time to accomplish unless Amazon
will be providing an Android API layer to
ease the transition as part of Amazon's
Vega SDK. More interesting questions
may end up being what requirements
will be placed on apps and whether Vega
will even allow side loading.

I expect you will have a fair amount of
time to choose your next streamer
solution (and the eventual device may
not even exist today).

Let's hope so.
