Here's my anecdotal evidence: I bought ~6 2TB barracudas about 3-4 years<br>
ago for recordings in my 24/7 mythbackend. Every one failed within 3<br>
years, the first one after ~3 months. The precipitating cause in every<br>
case, I believe, was a power failure, and the few that weren't<br>
completely fried indicated very high temperatures had been experienced<br>
(IIRC, > 50C). This was strange, as the box was in a well-ventilated<br>
room in the basement that never exceeded 20C.<br>

Several of the power failures/flickers were during prime time while we<br>
were watching MythTV, so I am pretty confident that it was power failure<br>
in all cases. <br>

I have replaced all of these drives with NAS or surveillance-grade disks<br>
(WDs, Seagates & Toshibas, depending on <a href="http://newegg.ca" rel="noreferrer noreferrer" target="_blank">newegg.ca</a>'s prices) of larger<br>
capacity. I am guessing that spending more now means spending less<br>
later. It is too early to say for certain, although I haven't had any of<br>
the higher-spec disks fail yet.<br>
