Hi Mike!
...OK: the 'mysql' and 'status' lines are displayed and then the GUI
for card configuration appears (with the overlay about the backend is
running).

Looks like mythbackend is still running when mythtv-setup is used, all
sorts of strange things can happen.
You need to run in a terminal before running mythtv-setup
sudo systemctl stop mythtv-backend.service
The "status: Name "com.ubuntu.Upstart" does not exist" message is
actually due to a problem with mythtv/packaging. Technically the problem
arises due to the switch from upstart to systemd on Ubuntu/Debian based
systems.
I have reported this problem, including a possible fix, see
https://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/13160

Did and didn't work as planned - I think. "sudo systemctrl stop
mythtv-backend.service" got rid of the overlay stating the Backend
was still running but at Terminal I still go the "status: Name
'com.ubuntu.Upstart' does not exist". I'm half-thinking that's a
"normal error" because something wasn't changed in the change
upstart to systemd, but at this point this amateur's gray matter
is spinning rapidly! The Good News is the stop command did stop
the Backend, or at least not overlay stating the Backed was
running displayed. Bad News is mythfilldatabase is still not
updating. ...I even tried changing the password to something
wrong, exit, then go back in and corrected the password, exit and
update. Was sort of hoping to change whatever configuration file
is in use to fix itself.

What I did and got at Terminal:
