Hi Robin!

Starting from a mythbuntu-16.04.1 install I've tried doing a frontend only
install but the control centre fails with errors in the plugins plugin! I
I'll preface my reply with I'm no where near an expert but I recently had a problem with failing plugins, MySQL faults, etc. If you have "MySQL Tweaks" turned on in MCC (Mythbuntu Control Centre" try turning that off. (Apparently something broke with an recent upgrade.) Error log from sudo cat /var/log/mysql/error.log includes these two lines:
(timestamp) [ERROR] unknown variable 'table_cache=128"
(timestamp) [ERROR] Aborting
Any ideas as to why the discovery of the database fails? Both boxes have
'localhost' as the host for it (even though they should be connecting to
the backend on my main Debian server).
Try editing /etc/mythtv/config.xml and /.mythtv/config.xml (notice the 'dot' in "/.mythtv"). BTW, I'm using Mythbuntu/Ubuntu, so the two config.xml's may be elsewhere.

You might want to reference the assistance I was given in mid-July in the thread "MythVE1 Backend Failed"

Good Luck!
