Hi Geoff (and the rest of my helpers)!
In Ubuntu appears the one we're looking for is at /etc/mysql/my.cnf. Three others at:
/etc/alternatives.cnf
/etc/mysql/my.cnf.fallback
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives.my.cnf

Okie-dokie: /etc/mysql/my.cnf doesn't have anything anything (well, commented lines) except to look at /etc/mysql/conf.d and /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d.

Taking a look at /etc/alternatives/my.cnf: looks to be a duplicate of /etc/mysql/my.cnf.

/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/my.cnf -- looks like maybe instructions in case a detour is needed but otherwise nothing as far as the table_cache=128 thing is concerned.

...Peter found the same error and suggestion, just an additional location. Off to his message!

Thanks!
