I would not record video to SD card, but I run my MySQL database for
Myth on SD card and it's fine.
An ATSC 1080i stream is usually 20Mbps max. So, two recordings and one
playback is 60Mbps network plus 60Mbps hard disk = 120Mbps or 15MBps,
seems like that is reasonable for a single USB channel.
Depends on the size of your database, which depends on how many
channels in your listings and how many recording rules you have. For
my two dozen OTA channels and a couple dozen recording rules, 512MB
was fine. If I remember when I get home I can grab a 'top' for some
objective numbers.
Where you using this master BE as a frontend as well? I would not
recommend combining a BE and FE when using RPis or similar devices.

If the RPi in question is a BE-only, then I guess slow is subjective.

Nope, backend only.
