I have the same receiver and I have the exact same
experience. I thought it was just "normal" and the way
it is. If you hear back from Onkyo Support I'd live to
hear what they say.

I have had this problem in the past but resolved it by setting the
frontend to always upconvert stereo to 5.1 so the output from
Mythtv never changes format. The Onkyo receiver is set to CBL
Direct mode ie do nothing. The display on the receiver shows it is
receiving MCH PCM 5.1.
G'day,

I have just now set the audio "Upmix to 5.1" and it doesn't make any
difference.

It seems like the first ~3 seconds of the delay is waiting for the
HDMI audio link to come up or suchlike.

The video starts, a few seconds delay, the "HDMI" light on the
receiver GUI glows, then less than 1/2 second later the "pcm" and/or
"DD" etc. lights come on.

Maybe I should SPDIF the audio to the receiver as Mr Bennett
suggests in a previous response.
I did buy an SPDIF audio out bracket, etc. but I really wanted the
HDMI all-in-one simple solution.

cheers,
