Thanks for the replies, you led me in the right direction and I got it fixed.

The "Rescan" button in the GUI was giving the "inval8d snd can not be used" error. I had been checking the backend logs (which showed nothing), but the frontend log showed that ALSA support was not compiled in. Must have been 100% my fault. In my haste to get this box working, I must have compiled MythTV before the ALSA libraries were installed. That's embarrassing.

I recompiled and now I have sound working through the speaker output, patched to the audio input on my TV. That's good enough for now. I have still not been able to get the DisplayPort audio working, even when setting the radeon driver option "audio" to 1.

Thanks!
Instead of trying to find the correct incantation just use the FE audio
setup rescan & then just pick from the drop-down box.. If it is not
listed then it not likely to work.
MythTV audio setup also has a 'speaker-test' feature.
Is the mythtv BE user "mythtv" a member of the audio group?
Do FE logs show any clues when running audio setup tool?

If the DP audio codec is missing then could be kernel or video driver.
The alsa website has a useful "alsainfo.sh" script.
Does the radeon driver still need a kernel boot option for HDMI/DVI/DP
audio ?
