No, I actually dug through the settings table. It's a brand new hostname. All kinds of new settings were inserted under the new name.
Besides, it looks like my application of -O is incorrect. After restarting mythfrontend:

Solved it. Some sort of theme issue.
I manually searched the settings table and found that the new host did not have a "Theme" entry. I manually inserted one for the host and filled it in with the theme I have used on my other front ends: Mythcenter-wide. The display now comes up.
That's weird that it wasn't already set, but you didn't have to poke it into the database. You could have started with an override -O Theme=Mythcenter-wide (as shown in the wiki entry you linked to earlier), and then gone into the frontend Setup and selected a theme for permanent use.

I spoke too soon. The front end displays some times and not others. If I restart mythfrontend it eventually comes up. What I always get is the textured blue background but no menu elements rendered on top of it.
I don't know what to make of this.
During one of the times it was up, I tried setting the theme through the GUI but this behavior persists.

This problem sounds suspiciously like a problem I and others have seen when the smolt service was unresponsive. Check this thread, maybe it will help:
