Couple of suggestions:
1) IIRC there is a command line switch when starting mythfrontend to force OpenGL, try that. I will see if I can look it up and post it shortly.
2) if you have multiple video outputs (like onboard video and video card) disable in bios any of the ones you are not using.

So I tried <b>mythfrontend -O ThemePainter=opengl </b>but still
nothing.<br>

I don't think the video output is the issue. As I said, running
xterm displays fine, running mythtv-setup displays fine.
/var/log/xorg.0.log shows the monitor is connected to and seen.<br>
<br>
I don't know how to explain it, there is a "brightness" to the
screen that says a black something is being displayed. The monitor
doesn't go into power saving mode.<br>
