Of all of the players MX Player PRO (yes the paid version) was the only one that gave smooth video. It has HW acceleration and it really makes a difference.

I now have a working Android frontend! And for the other question asked, I chose Mythlink because it also allows me to watch live TV. (I think it just schedules an immediate recording but that's ok).

All of the front-ends could use a serious UI overhaul...some just present lists, some giant buttons (assuming you're on a phone not a tablet), etc...but this is good enough.
I tried mythtv android app. Nice interface but I cannot get it to transcode hence work. I DID compile my myth and lack of documentation and lack of understanding has ment no progress.

In MythTV Player, go to the side flyout menu > Settings and make sure "Internal Player" is on, or else it will just stream raw recordings from the backend. Otherwise, look for the mythtranscode logs to see what is happening.
The app adheres strictly to the Google Android Material Design guidelines and tries to take advantage of the artwork MythTV provides through the Services API. I am really trying to make it a pleasing experience.

The way I see it is there are really 2 camps. Either just show lists of the data on your backend or use the artwork available to give a rich user experience. You mention both of these. Is there somewhere in between you would like to see these apps go?
