What you "should" do of course depends on what your goal is. I
usually just use "record any time on any channel". It's easier
to delete things that get recorded that you don't want than it
is to always be checking the schedule to make sure you get the
episodes you want (and inevitably end up missing something you
wanted). If one is very strapped for disk space (to the point
where recordings might get expired before you have a chance to
watch them), then this might be seen differently.
My practice is to spend some time either Thursday or Friday looking
at the handful of channels in my Favorites and scheduling those
programs I'm interested in. I suppose I could set up those programs
that I always watch as "record any time on any channel," but many of
them are programs that have new episodes for several weeks, and then
go into reruns. An example is Rehab Addict, which airs on both HGTV
and DIY. It appears that the new episodes are on HGTV. There are
many reruns of Rehab Addict, both on HGTV and DIY, and we've already
seen them, so there would likely be lots of them that we'd delete,
and we'd have to have a look at the beginning to see if it's one
we've seen.
"Any time on any channel" would work for most stuff, but there are
some programs that show in HD on our local PBS station that are
repeated on their sub channel in SD. I'd rather get the one from
their HD channel, so "any channel" isn't ideal.
