Please put your replies at the bottom!

According to Mike a randomised password is automatically generated,
but you say it asks you for one.
I would suggest that you give a password when asked and that you both
in ~/.mythtv/config.xml and in mysql check if it is actually that
password BEFORE running mythtv-setup or mythbackend. If you start
mythbackend the default way, it IS run under the user mythtv.
Mike named /home/mythtv/.mythtv/config.xml assuming you run as user
mythtv. If you run as another user make sure that .mythtv/config.xml
is present in that home directory and contains the right information.
If you run both back and frontend on the same machine and do not plan
to run a frontend on another machine you can use localhost as hostname
else use the ip-adress or, if you have a stable dns, the hostname.
