Wow, a lot of old-timers on this list! I remember my first lesson
in vi. It was actually a cheap version clone of vi that ran on our
corporate instrument controller, before Linux was anything more than
a glimmer in Linus' eye. I wondered why anyone would write such a
cryptic, hard-to-learn, hard-to-remember POS! Once I learned it,
though, there was no turning back. gvim is my favorite tool, used
on Windoze and Linux at work and home every single day!
Like they said, it was probably vi. I learned vi many years
ago when I first started working with Unix. I went to a lot of
customer sites, and it was the only reasonable editor you could
guarantee finding. Today you could get by just learning emacs,
I suspect, but vi is still my favorite. Here's what looks to be
an OK source for learning it: <a moz-do-not-send="true"

A friend was just over to help out with Linux and MythBuntu

During the course of troubleshooting, he looked through a
web site other(s) here had already referenced.
He zipped through it very fast (or at least a LOT faster
than I would have), and used a text editor to create one of
the files the web page recommended.

I can't recall the name of the Text Editor, but I know it
had only two digits, and I think one was the letter "V'.
If I was only interested in that text editor, I could
(re)ask him the name of if...
What I'm interested in hearing your opinion on is...
What Text Editor do you think is "the best" (by what ever
definition you choose),
and/or the one that you would recommend to a "newbie" like
me?
