I installed a fresh Mythbuntu in a 700 GB partition/extension on my drive,
but every time I boot to it I only get the front end.

Hi Daryl, Let me say that I share your pain. In Jan-Feb, I bought some
hardware for a mythtv server (to be run in the basement, serving as an
nfs/samba fileserver, too). I installed mythbunutu 12.04.2 and then
spent ages pulling out my hair. My problem? In retrospect, I didn't
follow the guides carefully enough. The obstacle in my case was that I
did not have channel listings available. I only was able to get myth
working when I set up an account at schedulesdirect
(http://www.schedulesdirect.org/) and configured the backend to use
it. I would suggest you set up a trial account before continuing.

Then, try the following on your mythbunutu box:
-close the mythfrontend
-under the Applications on the desktop, select System -> Mythtv Backend Setup
-if prompted, close any running mythbackends

Now, the rest is really just from the manual (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/User_Manual:MythTV_structure).
When faced with the setup menu,

-you should be able to leave the general settings as-is since your
frontend will be running on the same machine
-add your capture cards (*)
-add the schedulesdirect guide data to video sources
-configure your input sources from the capture cards and guide data
-you should be able to leave the rest of the settings unchanged, but
if you have done things right, your guide data should be visible in the
channel editor.

Once completed, exit the setup and let mythfilldatabase be run. Once
that completes, go back to the Applications tab and select Multimedia
-> MythTV Frontend. You should be able to view the tv listings and
play live tv.

If you run into problems, please do tell us what you have tried and
what the results have been.

----
(*) It may be wise to only add 1 capture card to start. And one
physical card may provide more than one capture card.
