I never watch shows on my MythTV. I have 3 tuners recording 24x7 based on a number of rules that grab TV shows and Movies. "starttime" and "endtime" makes sense because they were recorded on different dates by the tuner. The older entry in the duplicate field is a "0" and the newer recorded entry is a "1" in the duplicate field.

Actually, after re-reading your description, the problem is your MythTV configuration. As previously alluded in this thread, there are many settings which control whether re-record is allowed when things are auto-expired. You need to configure these properly, then use MythTV according to your configuration.

Specifically:

Re-record watched
If enabled, programs that have been marked as watched and are Auto-Expired will be re-recorded if they are shown again.

(in (main--not Video) General settings on the Auto-Expire screen) defaults to false, which means that if you don't manually delete shows, they will be allowed to re-record. Therefore, if you want to allow MythTV to auto-expire shows for you instead of manually deleting those shows, you need to enable "Re-record watched," and also ensure you mark shows as watched when you finish watching them.

er, make sure that's /not/ enabled.

There's another setting:

Automatically mark a recording as watched
If enabled, when you exit near the end of a recording it will be marked as watched. The automatic detection is not foolproof, so do not enable this setting if you don't want an unwatched recording marked as watched.

(in frontend Video Playback settings) you can use to allow MythTV to mark shows as watched for you.

and make sure you mark them as watched, or

Alternatively, when you finish watching a show and no longer want to keep it, Delete it yourself (and don't select, "Delete and allow re-record."
