I have had such issues with my Android devices when accessing mythtv Recording. My Android devices can access and play what I believe are mpeg2 Videos served up by the mythtv UPNP server. But some Android devices can not play back the mythtv Nuppelvideo Recordings.

I have an LG smart TV which I bought about 6 months ago. Can't rememeber the model right now but can post it back if you need it. It plays recordings from the MythTV UPNP server but my recordings are mpeg2 from DVB-T broadcasts. I'm not surprised you've had trouble playing nuppelvideo recordings as I believe there's very little that will play them other than MythTV. Very unlikely any smart TV will play them unless you transcode them to something else first.
