The wife switched the power off to the box and in the process created
several thousand lost+found files and a broken FE.
The quickest way to get the box back into a working state was to
"apt-get install --reinstall" most of the myth packages.

I didn't do the mythbackend as that seemed to be working, however I've
still got some strange issues and wanted to finish off the
re-installation process.
My question is, will running "apt-get install --reinstall
mythtv-backend" kill the database?

No... the database doesn't get created until you configure the backend... if it already exists, and you provide the credentials, it will just use the existing database.
