Kris,

After tweaking mythtv_tv_xml.php a bit (and disabling mythweb authentication), I am now able to get several TV shows to show up in mythroku. However, I am unable to play any of the videos, whether they be mp4, or nuv. I checked the video codecs, and confirmed that the mp4 files are mpeg-4 (see attached photo), so I'm not sure why they are not playing.

I telnet to $ROKU_DEV_TARGET 8080 but saw no player debugging info. Do you have any suggestions or areas to check?

-Rob

On Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 3:04 PM, Kris B. <krisbee@krisbee.com> wrote:
Well, I got MythRokuPlayer installed on my roku2 device. While the installation was fairly straightforward, I am now experiencing SQL errors when I try to load mythtv_tv_test.php. Yay ... more fun researching a solution =)
Unfortunately, my backend is too old (Athlon64 3200+), so transcoding on the fly is not possible for me at this time. I also discovered that the FIOS channels I record through my HDHomerum Prime are encoded in MPEG-2. I was originally hoping that I could watch my recorded shows from the roku without having to transcode the shows. Since the roku2 only supports MPEG-4, that is now a pipe dream.

A slightly different question; are there any media devices out there that can interact with the mythbackend and allow me to watch my HD shows on an SD TV without any transcoding involved?
Don't give up! My backend is an Athlon64 2800+ - I record shows and transcode them often - I just don't do it during primetime (4pm-11pm) so I won't bog down the machine. Using the iphone preset on handbrake and the script, transcoding takes place at around 15fps, and looks pretty comparable on an SD tv. Some shows I hard cut the commercials with a modified script - this not only makes in convenient but it also makes the shows shorter, hence quicker to transcode. You have to wait a day to watch the shows, but that isn't a big deal... I usually have three to four shows daily that are appear on my roku setup. If you follow the instructions, you can have these as a user job and it is pretty plug and play.

As or the SQL errors on the test file, one thing in my distro was that the time zone was not set in the php.ini which caused errors. Skip-Networking was also set on my.cnf (which makes external sql queries fail). Also, I didn't have the settings right on the mythroku config file, as well. Once I got all that squared away, I was rocking and rolling.

Transcoding really isn't that bad, since I do it - also it is nice to delete from the roku, and think of all that space you will be saving - the computer is sitting doing nothing anyway, why not make it work!? Just make sure you only allow one job to occur at a time.

Having said that - yeah, there are streamers that can access that content like the WD Live and the Patriot box - they can view any mpeg2 file - you just won't get real names and stuff in a screen; this is where the mythlink comes into play.

However, I think if you keep at it, you might be pleasantly surprised with the roku/mythroku setup...
