Email threading works by use of the optional IN-REPLY-TO header
field as defined in RFC822.

http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc822/#z30

The field specifies the exact email yours is in response to, so
clients that understand threading can properly place it in the
thread tree. Your responses lack this header, meaning as far as
most clients are concerned, you have started a new thread.

Gossamer-threads understands that many email clients behave
improperly, so any response containing the same subject string is
marked as being part of the same thread. However, lacking the
IN-REPLY-TO field, the best it can do is place the response
chronologically beneath the original email, rather than in reference
to the specific email you responded to.
