Saw this on Engadget. The project page is at http://gitbrew.org/otheros/

Here's a quick list of their claims:

OtherOS bootloader is booted directly from HV, no GameOS is involved.

Process of booting OtherOS bootloader loader is very similar to 3.15 method

Booting Linux from HDD/USB/BD/Network

Linux with GameOS rights

Full access to all HV SS services (Dispatcher Manager) from GameOS or Linux

Full access to all System Manager services

This is a question for those smarter than me - Does this mean that Linux could now access the GPUs? That was always the sticking point for making the PS3 a MythTV frontend.

I think the issue will still be drivers. While they have access to the hardware, creating drivers for the GPUs will be difficult. And without that, the PS3 is just a super fast calculator.
