<p>The recommendation is to have at least 2 physical drives. One for os temp and database and media on a separate drive. This is for performance as the db is worked fairly hard at times and could otherwise cause stutters of playback.</p>

<p>Some people are spreading it out further than the above.</p>
<p>/var/lib/mythtv is the default location, and ensure that recordings are going into sub directories (that dont exist when the mount fails - mounting hides the underlying files that exist in that mount point / directory before the mount.</p>

<p>This  ensures that if the mount fails the os partition isnt just filled up to the brim and causes all sorts of other issues.</p>
