A local ATSC station has started broadcasting 5 channel audio instead
of 6 channel audio.
There are three Front and two Rear but no LFE. The frontend, ATrpms
mythtv-0.23.1-240.fc12_bijou20101002.x86_64, based on 0.23.1 svn fixes 26863
will not play these files, hanging up and generating lots of Audio
buffer overflow
messages.. If I switch the audio output to stereo from 5.1, they play
fine. I am using
analog output only.

Tested your sample with 0.24; and it's all working as expected..

However, I did find an unexpected behaviour ; because channels configuration is set to 5.1 and the audio being played is 5.0 ; the audio is decoded then re-encoded to 5.0 AC3 again if you have the upmixer enabled even though the upmixer doesn't work on 5.0
