Dear Experts:

I am trying to get mythtv going under OSX 10.5.8
with an hdhomerun. I am working off binaries of
MythTV-0.21-release.dmg, which is 6,279,402,420 bytes, and contains
front-end and back-end binaries. I am consulting (and updating as I
go) http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Myth_on_Mac_OS_X

and http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Myth_on_Mac_x86

. everything is running on localhost (a macbook 13" unibody), and
permission is '0000'. there is only one hdhomerun, it can be
discovered on the network (checked with hdhomerun utilities), and it is
thus FFFFFFFF (defaults to port 0 under mythtv backend setup).

here is my adventure so far:

I did manage to install mysql
and follow the instructions. (I am not sure why mythtv needs such a
heavy duty engine, esp. because it needs to be installed extra by users
who often don't know. sqlite in the backend may have done just nicely,
and could have been packaged. but this is not important. just an
opinion...)

I can run both the backend and the frontend. On a 2560x1600
screen, the default fonts don't seem to fit in the provided boxes.
they also seem to be light-gray on white by default, which is again
hard to see. this is minor issue but probably worth fixing. I dialed
back to 1280x800 for trying it out, but the font colors are still hard
to see.

I select as my capture card the hdhomerun, and accept the defaults. I also put in a password and a temp directory, of course.

After MythTV-Setup is run, I did MythFillDatabase. However, it does not seem to do anything. It just opens and closes.

ok, my main goal is to get TV watching to work first. First, how do I get MythTV to detect the channels that it can tune to?

second,
when I start the frontend and I just want to watch TV, nothing
happens. it waits a few secs, then blinks briefly, then I am again at
the frontend view:
