MOV and MKV are just containers, they don't give any information about
the data contained within. Likewise, 720p and 1080p are just
resolutions and don't really mean anything with regards to playback.
I could generate a 480i file that would choke a supercomputer. The
relevant pieces of information are codecs, bitrates, and encoding
options. The Apple trailers are low (2-3 Mbit) bitrate CAVLC h.264
last I checked. What bitrate and encoding options did you use when
encoding the MKV? Is it CABAC h.264? higher bitrate than 2-3 Mbit?
These are the things that make it hard to play, not the resolution or
container.

I see I am using the 180.29 nvidia driver. From this site (<A HREF="http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU),">http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU),</A> I see that it say 180.44 supports VDPAU. This is likely to be the problem?
