I'm not sure if that answers my questions... I see that it does MPEG4-AVC (H.264) but is that the same as the MPEG4 used when doing software encoding.

mpeg4 is a collection of standard and codecs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpeg4

you never encode as "mpeg4" as it wouldn't mean much.

As to what VDPAU decodes; it's answered in my earlier answer .

If you had bothered searching for no more than 5s ; you would have got all your answers

Since from my recollection Myth was non-standard in how used either MPEG4 or NUV files (per the fact that, at least for a while, you couldn't take Myth's MPEG4 NuppleVideo container files and play them in MPLAYER), and since how MPEG4 is implemented is up to developers (per the Wiki docs you pointed me to), I didn't know if the stream was already in a format that could be pumped directly into VDPAU. I didn't see anything in my search to convince me it was directly supported.

And I've found a few hits that refer to the idea that it might not be supported:

The only MPEG4 codec supported by VDPAU is H.264 (is this what Myth uses for software encoding? I can't find any
reference to what Myth uses exactly for its software encoding other then just stating MPEG4):
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/366677#366677

Somewhere else states that MPEG4/H.264 DOES work:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/359655#359655

Somewhere else that says MPEG4 doesn't work on VDPAU:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/359593#359593

So I still haven't found anything that says "yes, MPEG4 type NUV files generated from the MythTV software encoder will be decoded and deinterlaced by VDPAU.
