It sounds like they are encrypting the extended basic packages (and up). I pretty much only watch FOX, ABC, NBC, and CBS.</div>
<div><br></div><div>I was just reading the Wikipedia page on DTV and I get the SDTV, EDTV, HDTV concepts a little bit better (clear as mud). So if no conversion is need because it's in MPEG already then I will probably look at getting the pcHDTV card (<a href="http://www.pchdtv.com/">http://www.pchdtv.com/</a>) and a WINTV-HVR-1250.</div>

</div>Hmm, I'm kind of confused by what you're saying. It is true that HD is<br>
in mpeg format already. It's all mpeg2 on my myth machine, where I use<br>
a HVR1250 to do all the digital cable recording. But, digital and HD<br>
are one and the same in terms of format as I understand it. The way<br>
comcast works for me is I have digital channels that can have any type<br>
of bitrate or resolution programming. My machine just plops them onto<br>
the hard disk regardless of whether it's HD or not: all digital gets<br>
treated the same.<br>
About the encryption issue: in my area comcast encrypts everything<br>
except the local networks and public TV. So my digital cable channels<br>
that I can record are NBC, Fox, CBS, ABC, CW, PBS, etc. They don't<br>
even leave TNT-HD or USA-HD unencrypted, which is nutty if you ask me.<br>

If you absolutely want to record all your encrypted comcast channels I<br>
believe the best solution right now is to get a cable box and the new<br>
Hauppauge HD-PVR box that can accept component input. The way I used<br>
to do it was use the Svideo input of my PVR-150 and output the cable<br>
box to it.<br>
