Thanks for all the helpful comments!
Lauri, I added: "TexturedVideo" "true" to xorg.conf and xvinfo sprang
to life! MythTV now renders fine on the whole.

That seems to solve a lot of problems.

On the downside, I get some really bad flickering intermittently with that option.

Not a little bit of tearing, but whole missing frames.

Hmm. I get bad tearin with my ATI hardware, it looks like it's in sync, as the tearing is always at the same place, but it's not in sync at the top of the frame. Grrr.

And sometimes when I change channels the whole display is out of whack, quitting out of LiveTV mode
and going back in usually fixes it.

That's a known bug, not sure if it's in Myth or the ATI drivers though.

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/335176
I didn't install fglrx but I'm wondering if that migh help with the
flickering.

Oh, is that with the radionHD drivers? Interesting.

Using fglrx is ok here with the textured video option enabled. Unusable without. Regardless, I'm in a much better boat now, just in time for the men's
finals at wimbledon =)
