why I decided to go USB. Problem is that the USB one I bought was
advertised on eBay as a MCE remote but when it arrived the USB
receiver is detected as a keyboard which means I can't create a
lircd.conf file, yadda yadda yadda see other posts. Anyway, I'm giving
up on that one as waaaay too hard.

My Case my remote wasnt an IR but RF, but it was first detected as a keyboard and mouse. So initially all input was put into the system via USB-HID and ATI_USB (it was a ati_remote wonder). I was able remove and blacklist the kernel module that was loading and making it a ps2 device, then was able to setup lircd to see the reciever, and irrecord then worked, but only when it was loaded with the module for the remote reciever, and the remote reciever wasnt being read by another device.

Currently I use MythDora, which they have an option for my remote, so I didnt need to recreate this setup in a while.
