I've found the easiest way to softmod an XBox is to use the "Hot-Swap"<br>
technique. Basically you start the XBox and get it to the dashboard<br>
(Thereby unlocking the hard-drive), then pull the IDE cable and swap<br>
it for an IDE cable on a (Running and waiting with a special linux<br>
distro) PC, which then does the job of patching and unlocking the<br>
system (Generally by installing a patched font file and a new<br>
dashboard), which gives you full FTP access into the XBox to do as you<br>
